About this Event
WurliPop is an 8-piece funk and soul band from the Puget Sound area that came together in 2023 with the sole goal of being the funnest, funkiest, and most party-inducing band in the region.
WurliPop crafts a party atmosphere by taking songs we all know and rethinking them into all-new musical experiences that gets even the stuffiest audience on their feet. Miley Cyrus' "Party In The U.S.A." as a New Orleans second-line dance party? SURE! Garth Brooks' "Friends In Low Places" as if it was recorded by Otis Redding? YES, PLEASE! Donna Summers' "I Feel Love" as a Latin-jazz funk blast? OK! Nirvana's "Come As You Are" as a groovy spy theme song? OH, HELL YEAH!
Yes. They play covers. But no, you haven't heard these songs before.
WurliPop is putting the fun in funky and the funky in your feet.
----------------
WurliPop is made up from some of the area's busiest musicians.
Korum Bischoff is the band's Grammy-nominated drummer who has rocked 1000+ audiences nationally with legendary family-music band Recess Monkey and indie outfit The Dead Science. Now residing in Suquamish, WA, Korum has played in dozens of other bands in the PNW over the last 30 years. He has recorded and/or performed with everyone from his brother Jherek Bischoff, to David Byrne, Yo Gabba Gabba, Amanda Palmer, Xiu Xiu, El Vez, Devilhead, and many more. His other current projects include The Phantom Years and Western Arrow.
A multi-instrumentalist, Riley Cummins' main instrument is sax which he has been playing for nearly two decades. He's WurliPop's tenor saxophonist, bringing his passion for both jazz and yacht rock to the band's eclectic vibe.
Vocalist and Wurlitzer keyboard (the band's namesake instrument) Danny Figgins spent years in a capella super-group Kickshaw, who played every venue and festival for more than a decade. Now a school music teacher on Bainbridge Island, WA, he passes the same level of enthusiasm and love for music to his students as he does to WurliPop audiences.
Perhaps you've seen WurliPop's guitarist, John Hural, in one of his other musical endeavors. As the lead guitarist in Santana tribute band Batuka, with Latin/Salsa combo WEPA, and in a number of reggae groups up and down the West Coast, John is a mainstay at venues throughout the region.
Stephen Kennedy holds down the bottom as WurliPop's bassist. An in-demand jazz bassist from Tacoma, WA, Stephen is the Director of Instrumental Music at Todd Beamer High in the Federal Way School District.
Bremerton emcee Mackrayz has been making music for years as part of the rap group Upper Left. His raspy flow gives WurliPop the flexibility to take on all styles of music and really reimagine each song in innovative ways.
Alto saxophonist Dr. Adam Pelandini is an active performer, clinician, and music educator based in the Pacific Northwest. Formerly active in Boston, MA particularly with the Boston Symphony Orchestra his playing was described as “sensitive,” with “tonal richness” and “pinpoint tuning” by The Boston Musical Intelligencer and “Sinuous” by the Boston Globe. Before joining WurliPop, Adam was an adjunct professor of applied saxophone at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, WA.
Last but definitely not least (we're going alphabetically in case you didn't notice), Stina Tillotson's rich alto voice rounds out WurliPop's sound. Stina is a vocalist with a diverse background in jazz, soul, folk, and indie rock. A Soundsation alum and two-time finalist for the Seattle-Kobe Jazz Vocalist Competition, Stina loves to push musical boundaries and collaborate on new connections between jazz and other genres. Current projects include learning to play ukulele and managing her micro flower farm.
