Schubert’s two masterful piano trios, written in the final year of his tragically short life, will be brought to life by a trio of eminent musicians who are well known to Schubert Club audiences. Audience members who attended the 2021 Schubert Revealed at the State Fairgrounds may remember the trio’s masterful performance.
Cellist David Finckel and pianist Wu Han are among today’s most distinguished figures in classical music. Since 2004, they have served as Artistic Directors of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and they are the founders and Artistic Directors of Music@Menlo festival. Married since 1985, they continue to perform as recital partners as well. For 34 years, David Finckel was the cellist of the Emerson String Quartet, an ensemble awarded nine GRAMMY’s and the coveted Avery Fisher Prize, while Wu Han currently serves as Artistic Advisor for Wolf Trap’s chamber music series and for Palm Beach’s Society of the Four Arts. In 2012, David Finckel and Wu Han were given Musical America’s “Musician of the Year” award.
Joining them for this concert is a regular partner of theirs, Benjamin Beilman, who is regarded as one of the leading violinists of his generation. Beilman has made numerous Schubert Club appearances, including with David Finkel and Wu Han in 2021 as part of “Schubert Revealed,” and on the International Artist Series in 2023 with pianist Yekwon Sunwoo.
The New York Times has praised his “handsome technique, burnished sound, and quiet confidence,” while The Strad magazine described his playing as “pure poetry.” Beilman became one of the youngest artists to be appointed to the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music in 2022 and he continues to perform around the globe as both a soloist and chamber musician. This program is testament to Schubert’s genius and grit, as he completed both piano trios despite suffering terribly from symptoms of advanced syphilis.
