Bryony Lanigan, a rising star in cosmology, from the Royal Observatory Greenwich talks about “Atoms and Astrophysics“. “While we are able to use telescopes to observe deep into space, these only allow us to watch from our position as the universe evolves naturally – we cannot send probes to measure and analyse intergalactic space.”
In this talk, she will describe laboratory work using atomic physics to search for a particular kind of dark energy, as well as some other ways atoms can be used to probe the sort of physics, we would ordinarily consider firmly astronomic in scale.
This is followed by a brief AGM for our members.
