About this Event

Writers write what we know. Good action scenes are valuable storytelling tools in all genres from fantasy and thrillers to mystery and beyond. But many writers struggle with the details and dynamics of violence and self-defense. How do weapons work? What are they called? What is a fight in the first place? These knowledge gaps can spoil scenes and drive readers into another title’s pages.

If only there was somebody who could help writers better speak the language of violence.

Join us for a uniquely engaging workshop designed to help writers learn how to effectively present the technical details, internal and external mechanics, and the potential spirit found within good fight scenes. Bring your questions and come equipped to scribble notes as your host guides you through live demonstrations, show-and-tell, and lessons learned from a brutal education.

Instructor

Daryl E.J. Simmons holds a 5th degree black belt in Hapkido and a supplemental black belt in Jujitsu. This martial scientist has trained civilians, law enforcement, and military personnel in unarmed and armed combat tactics for over 30 years. Though he considers himself a philosopher first, “Uncle Daryl” is an avid firearms instructor, armorer, and decorated combat veteran who served in naval intelligence on five continents and deployed with SEAL Teams TWO, FOUR, SEVEN, EIGHT, and TEN. Simmons is also the author of the reader-acclaimed “Oath Keeper” series and “After the West.” When he is not writing or fighting, this former podcaster pays the bills as the real life Sherlock Holmes.
