About this Event

Join us at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe located 236 E 3rd St, New York, NY 10009 for a writing workshop. We'll discuss how religious related trauma often intersects with our mental health, write in response to prompts that support us in exploring those topics in a brave space together, and share poems. Maya will also answer questions about their book, Judas & Suicide (which will be available for purchase), and share a few poems.

About the book:

Suicide is often framed as betrayal, even though we live in a world that betrays us. When this world tells us that death is better, what does it mean to have faith in life? Judas & Suicide is a poetry collection navigating religion and suicidality. It approaches these topics through the lens of Black family and community, sadness, Medic*tion, sexual violence, the Pr*son industrial complex, media, and Bible verses. Judas & Suicide explores how to be convinced to stay alive without feeling obligated to.

About Maya:
