Have you ever wondered what makes a fairy tale? Have you ever been tempted to create your own? Join us for an electrifying writers’ series focusing on the craft of spinning these mythical yarns. During the month of October, author Ben Curl will be hosting a weekly workshop at A Novel Concept that looks at themes found in fairy tales including transformation, taboo, otherness, and animal guides.
These 2-hour workshops will be held on Wednesdays in October from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The first half of each session will be dedicated to discussion around the week’s theme followed by an open writing session in which participants can feel free to work on that week’s prompt or talk shop with their fellow writers. The discussions will be leaning heavily on Angela Carter’s infamous collection The Bloody Chamber, a copy of which is included in the registration fee. The series will culminate in a reading where folks can share their own fairy tale creations from the workshop—the stranger, the better.
Ben Curl is a speculative fiction writer. His short stories have been published and/or produced as podcast episodes by numerous indie publishers, including Underland Press, Horror Hill, Night Shift Radio, and Timberghost Press. Two of his fairy tale-inspired stories will appear in collections this fall.
Workshop dates:
October 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30
6:30–8:30 p.m.
Former workshop attendee testimonials:
“I joined the 2023 Subversive Dreaming workshop as a hobby writer looking to get more serious, and found a vibrant community of fellow writers. Ben Curl's thoughtful guidance and instruction was invaluable, and I learned so much about the short story form through our discussions of the selected readings. I would recommend this workshop to writers of any level.”
— Lauren Huff, MSU employee and current CLEF member
"I had always wanted to write fiction seriously, and Ben's workshop was so welcoming, fun, a bit zany, and has given me hope and energy to complete my stories.”
