More about Writing Tools for the College Admissions Essay

Most high school students never have received any instruction in how to write a personal essay. Yet at a time when getting admitted to their dream college is more competitive than ever, the admissions essay may turn out to be the single most important thing they will ever write. The stakes are high.

In Writing Tools for the College Admissions Essay, veteran journalist and writing coach Roy Peter Clark shows how any student can showcase their unique achievements, intellect, and attributes to stand out from the crowd.

Packed with nearly two dozen remarkable essay examples and 100 digestible essay writing tips that students can carry with them throughout their careers, this is the essential guide every high school student, parent, and teacher needs.

Roy Peter Clark is senior scholar at the Poynter Institute, one of the most prestigious schools for journalists in the world. A writer who teaches and a teacher who writes, he has authored or edited twenty books on writing and journalism, including Writing Tools, M**der Your Darlings, and The Art of X-Ray Reading.

Holly Slaughter is the Elementary Reading and Language Arts Specialist in Pinellas County Schools, the eighth largest district in the state and the 28th largest district in the nation. She has taught reading and writing to students at every level from kindergarten through eighth grade in the public school system where she continues to work alongside students, teachers, coaches, and school leaders as a champion for literacy. For more than 10 summers, she was a teacher and then assistant coordinator for The Poynter Institute Media Studies Writers Camp, three weeks of writing work and fun where students and their teachers engaged in daily writing, discussions about writing and writing process, and lived like journalists. She is the author of Small-Group Writing Conferences, (Heinemann) and lives in Seminole, Florida.

Signe Webb serves as the Chief Academic Officer with Write Score, a literacy technology company that partners with schools and districts from coast to coast, where she oversees program development and helps shape the company's offerings and impacts on education. With a career spanning from the classroom to curriculum leadership, she has dedicated herself to enhancing literacy and instructional excellence. Before stepping into her executive role, Signe served as a curriculum supervisor, reading and writing coach, and teacher, experiences that shaped her understanding of and love for literacy and effective learning strategies.

As the author of Surefire Writing Strategies and editor of The Strong Writer Series, she has helped educators and students alike develop stronger, more confident writing skills. Her commitment to storytelling extends beyond the academic realm—she is currently working on her first novel, blending her expertise in language with her creative spirit.

Driven by innovation and a love for learning, Signe strives to inspire educators, students, and writers through her leadership, authorship, and unwavering dedication to the power of words.
