As a child, I always looked forward to taking field trips with my class at school. It was an excuse to escape the day-to-day drudgery and expand my horizons with new experiences in fun places. I was exposed to different environments that stimulated my enthusiasm for study. I learned new approaches to my work simply because I did that work surrounded by sights, sounds, textures, and aromas of unique spaces. These experiences strengthened my understanding and helped me to develop empathy for my friends' perspectives. In the field, I was given permission to learn and practice my skills differently, away from the expectations of pre-defined criteria. I became more proficient because learning was camouflaged by fun.As an adult, I try to remember those experiences and replicate them whenever I can. I haven't been doing that so much lately, so now I'm getting intentional about it. I'm planning a series of monthly Writing Field Trips. They will be full-day excursions to entertaining places that will encourage my creative process in new ways. I'll have a loosely planned schedule, tight enough to immerse myself fully in the extraordinary writing experience each location offers but relaxed enough to allow me to chat with my friends... play, share a meal, and perhaps meet some new people and become exposed to different writing techniques.
Would you like to come along? I think it would be fun if you did. As they say, the more, the merrier!
If the weather is good, we'll write at Greenfield Village. If the weather's not so great, we'll write at The Henry Ford Museum.
