About this Event

HEALTH & SAFETY: WE ASK THAT YOU PLEASE WEAR A FACE MASK WHILE INDOORS FOR OUR EVENTS. THANK YOU.

New Yorker Executive Editor Michael Luo's book, Strangers in the Land: Exclusion, Belonging, and the Epic Story of the Chinese in America, couldn't come at a more important time. Michael Luo, the executive editor of the New Yorker and before that an award-winning journalist at the New York Times, has indeed written an epic story about the Chinese experience in America: it is a story filled with tragedy, injustice, violence, and racism that has persisted to our present moment. Luo's accounts of the Chinese immigration wave during the 19th century gold rush and beyond center on characters that create a sweeping and extraordinary history of Chinese settlement in America, and a story of what all immigrant groups have felt for centuries: exclusion, scapegoating, and often success in spite of all that.

In conversation with National Book Award winner Charles Yu, author of the novel Interior Chinatown. Yu was also nominated for two Writers Guild awards for his work on Westworld, and has written for the New Yorker, the New York Times, Wired, and other publications.

Limited parking onsite. We recommend rideshares and carpooling. Please allow time to find parking.
