Writer Takeover at Spectacle Island!

Come join us for a day filled with creativity and inspiration at Spectacle Island! We're grateful to the Save the Harbor/Save the Bay Foundation for letting us hitch a FREE ride of the ferry to hang out on Spectacle Island for a day of fun, exploration, and writing! This year, we're even including a FREE craft talk from author and instructor Chevahn Brown! Read the description of her talk below!

The Lie They Live: Character Flaws as Survival TacticsWe often think of character flaws as weaknesses - but what if they’re really survival skills? This talk explores how the core flaw of your protagonist was once their greatest strength, and how understanding that shift leads to more emotionally layered storytelling. Think: fear of intimacy born from abandonment, or perfectionism as armor against chaos. We’ll discuss how to write those contradictions with depth and compassion.

This craft talk is free and optional during our time on the island. It's perfect for anyone who wants to dig deeper into character and learn something new without being on Zoom or in a stuffy classroom!

There are key things to know about participating in our event, so please read the following carefully:

Location: The address from which we will be departing is 60 Rowes Wharf, Boston, MA 02110. This address is located behind the Boston Harbor Hotel. If you find the big archway with the big flag, walk through it towards the water and take a right onto the harborwalk.

Getting There: This is just a short walk from both South Station (Red/Silver Line) and Aquarium Station (Blue Line). There is parking available at public garages in the area - although these do require a fee to park.

Check in: We will be checking people in next to the Mass Bay Lines office to board the boat "The Freedom".

Arrival time (IMPORTANT!): Please arrive at Rowes Wharf at 9:00am to check in for our 9:30am Boarding and prompt 10:00am departure. The trip out to Spectacle is about 40 minutes.

Island departure: We will be boarding the boat at 1:00pm to depart by 1:15pm, and will be back in Boston by 2:00pm.

Things to Bring:

• Water bottle
• Lunch
• Trash Bag (this is a carry on-carry off island)
• Sun Protection (hats, sunblock, sunglasses, etc)
• A notebook and writing instrument!
