this crazy desire
Welcome to the world of the Sonnet and other rhymes of passion where more is more yet never enough and love hurts so bad it feels good.
What is this crazy desire?
We sing of this crazy desire—este deseo loco—in Stroope’s Four Spanish Sonnets. Stroope does not set each poem whole, he borrows only the words he needs, connecting the four Sonnets by harmonic, rhythmic and melodic fabric until we believe, perhaps as de la Vega may have, that love trumps everything.
Love was Shakespeare’s language; and we sing his language in Dobrogosz’ My Rose songs and Harris’ Sonnet, an effusive ode to the Bard. Harris borrows lines from different sonnets as well as the Merchant of Venice re-contextualising—refreshing—that old subject, Love. The modal harmonies and whole tone melodies create a tonal flux that bewitches and bewilders the ear, a restless love.
To act or not to act on this crazy desire, ask the Three Flower Songs of Whitacre. Hide, says the first; go! says the second; you’re mine, cries the third, impatient with longing. The final act is a telling of Bernstein’s West Side Story—the Ultimate Love Story, the story of ‘til death do us part—of a Romeo after every Juliet’s heart.
Love.

About SMUCC
Formed in 2007 by five enthusiastic choristers, the SMU Chamber Choir is one of the most prestigious arts clubs in SMU. The choir-family of undergrads and alumni continues to grow and learn from a wide repertoire and diverse experiences, in quest of artistic excellence.
The Choir has performed around the world, in friendship concerts for local communities, and received Gold awards at several international choir festivals and music competitions; most recently at the 2nd Salzburg International Choral Celebration and Competition, Austria, in 2019. They have exchanged knowledge and different ways of listening with choirs at home, and in Bandung, Indonesia.
In recognition of the Choir's contributions to student life, they were awarded the SMU University Student Life 'Bronze' Award in 2020 and 2021. In 2022, SMUCC also co-created and gave voice to re:site, a site-specific performance at SMU Connexion, built on an original poem written for the Festival by SMU President, Prof Lily Kong. A loving homage to the old National Library building, the work explored the loss and conversion of spaces through text, sound and movement.
SMUCC also performs frequently at various local events such as school programmes, community outreach programs, carolling projects and our annual Production — Wrinkles in The Air.
