Beethoven’s dramatic overture, one of three originally composed for the opera he
eventually called Fidelio, is among his most well-loved works and will provide a rousing
start to the WPO’s concert season.
Kai Vollprecht, who has been working with the WPO since 2022 as its resident composer, will present his biggest work yet for the orchestra — his approachable and energetic style is sure to complement the drama of the other works on the programme.
Young bassoonist Siping Guo makes his debut with the orchestra to play Rossini’s tuneful concerto, a rarely heard gem and a brilliant showcase for the instrument.
To round off the afternoon, Dvořák’s ever-popular and sunlit Symphony No. 8 presents all the virtuosity, energy, lyricism and dramatic flair of a composer at the peak of his compositional powers. It rightly remains one of the most frequently performed of all late nineteenth-century symphonies.
