Join editor and author JJ Lee for an evening of true-life tales from less-than-perfect holidays.
The night features heartbreaking, hilarious, and chaotic stories from contributors to the non-fiction book Better This Year (in stores Holidays 2025).
- Local playwright and actor Tetsuro Shigematsu and writers Subbu Govindarajapuram, Thi Tran,and Vincent Ternida share their stories of Christmases gone wrong.
- In "First Snow-Nina," Subbu Govindarajapuram describes his first holiday season after immigrating to Canada, where he used a Sony camcorder to cope with homesickness and isolation.
- Tetsuro Shigematsu's "The Heist" recounts how he and his two sisters resorted to "petty larceny" to get a Christmas tree on December 24.
- Vincent Ternida's "No Rewind, No Replay" details his attempt to escape a failedVancouver relationship by traveling to the Philippines, only to run into another ex in Manila.
- In "The Fancy Mall," young Thi's harried mother takes her family to a mall where theycannot afford anything, but she still tries to fulfill her daughter's holiday wish.
