Synopsis: I remember reading once, and even hearing it in a lecture, that the role of a pastor is to preach the Good News of Jesus Christ. Our role is not to be a life coach, teaching people how to live a successful life, but to proclaim Jesus Christ salvation to the world. Pastors are to proclaim salvation through the grace of Jesus Christ, and Christ alone.
Then, as Scott Hoezee states, along comes a passage like John 15:9-17, or Luke 17:5-10. Jesus says, “If you do what I say ... then I will love you.” Does the “if” in this sentence bothers you, does it make you ask if salvation is conditional? Does Jesus stop loving us if we sin?
Thankfully, that is not the case, Jesus still loves us, in spite of our sin. He made that clear on the cross. There is a lesson here however, and an important one. It is addressed to those who have accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and live in His love. We’ll explore all of this on Sunday.
