ABOUT SOUTHERN WAKES UNITED:
In 2018 the Lauderdale Lakes Aqua Skiers (Elkhorn, WI) and Whitewater Lakes Sports Club (Minneiska Water Ski Show Team) merged, forming the ONLY water ski show team in Walworth County, Wisconsin... the Southern Wakes United Water Ski Show Team!
The Lauderdale Aqua Skiers had its modest beginnings in the 1950s when a group of young people who loved to ski decided they wanted to perform for their friends and neighbors. Using their own boats and fuel, they performed a single, annual show in conjunction with the Lauderdale Regatta Day in front of the Sterlingworth Motor Hotel. Their only rewards were the appreciation of their audience and a complimentary dinner at the Sterlingworth after the show.
Following not many years later, in 1973 the Whitewater Lake Sports Club was formed and included sailing, canoeing and skiing. The skiing portion continued full strength and was named the Minneiska Water Ski Team in 1974. The team performed their first show on July 21, 1974 for the Lions Club.
Both teams were competing in the Wisconsin State Water Ski Show Tournament by 1980, and both teams have won their share of awards throughout their individual histories.
Over the years, the two teams, located so near to each other, have formed a unique rivalry which included great competition, some shared skiers and great friendships, but both teams remained too small to compete against some of the larger teams in the state.
After a failed merger attempt in the 1990s, the teams remained separate and continued to struggle. Once again in 2018, the two boards of directors decided to explore the option of a merger, understanding that a move like that would allow them to share resources (this is an expensive sport!!) and create the best learning environment for their team members. This time the merger was a success, and now you can see SWU perform weekly throughout Walworth County!
The mission of Southern Wakes United Water Ski Show Team is to give the young and young-at-heart an opportunity to work together to build confidence, learn new skills and promote water safety education and sportsmanship.
