The program will begin with a presentation by O'Keeffe scholar and WT faculty member Amy Von Lintel to establish the audience in O'Keeffe's life during this time period. Then Dr. Kathleen Bell (oboe), Dr. Conor Bell (bassoon), and Dr. Sarah Rushing (piano) will premiere the new compositions by Rabb and Magin.
Rabb's "Unpainted Pictures" is a composition in six movements, where the composer imagines O'Keeffe's wartime letters as potential paintings that were never completed:
I. The Ground Just Doesn’t Know How to Treat Rain (September 20, 1916)
II. Following Cow Trails Through the Cedars Along the Stream (March 11, 1917)
III. I Wish the Wind Were a Someone that Loved Me (June 8, 1917)
IV. Between the Sunset and the Moonrise (October 1, 1917)
V. But I’ve Been Like a Young Tornado (December 7, 1917)
VI. Your Letters in My Hand (April 30, 1918)
The letters will be read by Von Lintel before each movement.
Magin's "O'Keeffe Suite" is a collection of five movements inspired by paintings that O'Keeffe created during this same time period:
I. Starlight Night
II. Evening Star
III. Palo Duro Canyon
IV. Morning Sky with Houses
V. Sunrise
The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum has graciously allowed us to project images of the paintings during the performance of Magin's suite.
