Celebrate World Soil Day with a community of researchers, producers, industry, and students sharing their perspectives on why soil matters.
About this Event

SoilsWest and Soil Science Australia (Western Australian branch) invite you to celebrate World Soil Day 2022, Monday December 5 at the State Library of Western Australia.

Connect with your community and hear exciting perspectives from leading soil researchers, practitioners, industry, producers, and students across four themes:

  • Roots Run Deep: First Nations knowledge
  • Landscapes: Perspectives at scale
  • Where Food Begins: Healthy soil, healthy food
  • Back to Earth: Recycling and re-evaluating

The full day program will be available shortly, and features eye-opening panel and presentation sessions from speakers such as Paul Galloway, Tim Overheu, Jenni Clausen, Bede Mickan, Raphael Viscarra-Rossel, Tona Sanchez-Palacios, George Mercer, Jim Campbell-Clause and Angela Stuart-Street, plus many more to be announced soon.

This free event will run from 9:00AM to 4:00PM at the State Library Theatre and Theatre Foyer before concluding with a social sundowner ending at 5:00PM.

SoilsWest and Soil Science Australia (WA) will provide complementary morning tea, lunch, and light refreshments at the close of day sundowner.

Please aim to arrive for registration between 8:30AM and 9:00AM.


Venue information:

State Library of Western Australia (25 Francis St, Perth Cultural Centre, Perth WA 6000)

The THEATRE is located on the ground floor on the Northern side of the Library and can be accessed from the main entrance in the Cultural Centre or from Francis St. You will see our event set up in the Foyer area just outside the Theatre.

Perth Train Station exits into the Cultural Centre across from the State Library, or City of Perth Parking is available nearby at the State Library or Cultural Centre lots.

Please note this is an in-person only event and presentations will not be live-streamed or recorded.

VIDEO COMPETITION - Share your soil story!

As part of World Soil Day celebrations, SoilsWest and Soil Science Australia are holding a short video competition.

The contest is open to all, with videos being 20-60 seconds in duration, shot in portrait format, and relate to the theme of why soil is important to you or shows why soil is important in the world.

  • We want entries to tell the world why soil matters. You could:Show how soil is connected to so many different things in our daily lives
  • Show how soil can be fascinating and fun
  • The direction you take is up to you

Soil Science Australia (WA) are offering $700 in prizes across three categories:

  • Overall winner judged by panel - $300
  • People’s Choice winner - $200
  • Under-18 winner - $200

How to enter:

Send your video entries to [email protected] and share on Twitter tagging @SoilsWest and @SoilScienceAust

Your video entry will then be added to an online poll and shared by SoilsWest for voting in the People’s Choice category.

Videos will be screened at this World Soil Day event with further chances to vote online for those in attendance before presentation of prizes.

Entries must be submitted by November 30.
