This special day reminds us that when we gather at the Lord's table, we are not alone – we are part of a vast family of believers spanning every continent, culture, and language.
World Communion Sunday began in 1933 at Shadyside Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh as a way to bring churches together in a service of Christian unity. Today, it has grown into a worldwide celebration that transcends denominational boundaries and geographic borders. From rural villages in Kenya to bustling cities in South Korea, from ancient cathedrals in Europe to house churches in South America, Christians everywhere will break bread together on this day.
As we partake of communion on October 5th, we'll be reminded that the table of Christ knows no divisions of race, nationality, economic status, or political affiliation. The same Jesus who walked the dusty roads of Palestine two thousand years ago continues to invite all people to his table of grace. When we eat the bread and drink from the cup, we proclaim our unity with believers we may never meet this side of heaven but with whom we share an eternal bond.
