About Virginia
Dr Virginia Keft is a multi-disciplinary award-winning dancer, artist, curator, and researcher. She is the artistic director and principal of Cinnamon Twist Belly Dance, Wollongong’s longest continuously running centre for the study of Middle Eastern dance and contemporary belly dance. With over 25 years’ experience, Virginia is known for her charismatic stage presence, down to earth teaching style, and in-depth knowledge around the history and culture of Oriental dance. Inspired by both the practical and theoretical aspects of the dance, Virginia has studied, performed, and taught both nationally and internationally. Virginia is committed to building strong communities in both art and dance spaces. She holds the position of Producer, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Programs at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia and was recently named winner of the prestigious University of Wollongong’s Arts and Culture Award for 2023.
About the Workshops

Creative Combos and Smooth Transitions
Have you ever wondered how some dancers glide gracefully from one step to another? Smooth transitions make for a seamless performance. Let Virginia present you with some creative combinations to combat clunky transitions. Together we will break down the transition steps to allow you to develop a smooth and graceful performance style.
Level: Beginner to Advanced

Pumped Up Balkan
Explore the lively and theatrical art of skirt dance in this pumped-up Balkan Pop workshop. Virginia will have you swishing, clapping, twirling and laughing with sassy hip combinations and playful skirt manoeuvres all set to fiery and upbeat fusion music. Whether your dance background is traditional belly dance, Tribal, Oriental, or somewhere in between you'll leave this workshop with some great new material and inspiration for your own dance practice.
Sunday June 23 - 11 am to 1 pm
Shake that Tambourine
Join Virginia for a fun and upbeat tambourine workshop. We will delve into new ways to use this dynamic and under-utilised dance prop. Learn how to incorporate the tambourine into your dances with combinations, turns, taps, bumps and more. Plus, we'll put what you've learnt together into a short and fun mini-choreography.
Level: Beginner-Advanced
Bring: You’re welcome to bring a Tambourine if you have one, but it’s not essential. Most of the workshop will use paper plates to demonstrate and learn. Some instruments will be available to share.
Sunday June 23 - 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm
Shimmy, pop, lock and drop!
Join Virginia to explore the nitty-gritty of punchy accents, fiery flourishes, unexpected pops, and thrilling shimmies. These fun elements of belly dance technique can be tricky to master but show-stoppers when executed well. In this technique workshop for every level we will learn combinations that explore the precision, balance, and control/release needed to unlock these movements. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned professional you are bound to leave this workshop with some new ways to think about these belly dance favourites.
