About this Event

What is it?

Join Potter Clarkson at CodeBase Edinburgh for a 2-hour workshop on IP strategy, hosted by Craig Brownlie and Andrew Pearson.

An IP strategy is the part of your business plan that sets out how you plan to develop, protect, use and - most importantly - commercialise your intellectual property (IP) so that your innovation can achieve its maximum value. Having an IP strategy isn’t solely an exercise in working out how you plan to move forward, though. It will preserve your competitive advantage and help to safeguard the investment that you, your employees and your investors have made in your business.

At the most basic level, your IP strategy will set out how you plan to protect your IP. Depending on your innovation and business model, you may need a blend of patents, designs, trade marks and trade secrets to provide the exclusivity you want. Your IP strategy is there to guide you through each stage of the innovation cycle and will ultimately be judged on the value it creates. That value will come from the way in which you commercialise your innovation.

Your IP strategy will therefore play a defining role in creating and supporting the value of your business and your commercial advantage by creating exclusivity and protecting your products or processes from the unwanted attention of your competitors.

What can I expect?

In this workshop, Potter Clarkson will provide an overview of the different types of IP right available and discuss the importance of having an IP strategy in place, with a particular emphasis on patents.

As the workshop is aimed at start-up founders, it will have a commercial focus with practical considerations to help you get the most out of it.

You can also sign up for Office Hours with Craig and Andrew after the session, if you would like more focussed advice.

Who is Craig Brownlie?

Craig has considerable experience in drafting and prosecuting patent specifications for inventions in the nanotechnology sector, including electrical storage cells, graphene applications, environmental sensors, user interfaces and wearable electronics.

Following his PhD - which involved the fabrication of thin film magnetic samples as potential storage “bits” using electron beam lithography, and analysis of their magnetic switching behaviour using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy - Craig entered the patent profession in 2007.

He joined Potter Clarkson in 2009 and became a partner in 2018.

Who is Andrew Pearson?

Andrew draws upon his broad knowledge base to draft and prosecute UK and European patent applications on a range of technologies. He also works on worldwide patent prosecution strategies, infringement and validity opinions, due diligence, and freedom to operate exercises

Previously a post-doctoral research associate at the University of Sheffield, later the University of Cambridge, Andrew has nearly 10 years’ experience developing organic photovoltaics, perovskite photovoltaics, and related devices. He has co-authored over 50 papers in journals including Advanced Materials, Energy and Environmental Science, and Nature, and continues to write on technology and IP developments.

Working in the firm’s electronics and computing department, Andrew joined Potter Clarkson in July 2018.
