Art Hub & Faculty of Senses is pleased to present the workshop Contamination as Collaboration by artist Sissel Marie Tonn (DK/NL).
In the workshop, Sissel Marie Tonn will introduce the themes of her artistic practice and facilitate a collective world-building workshop, a site-specific science-fiction storytelling using Echoes - an open-source mobile app that can create GPS-triggered audio tours.
“Where do we perceive our bodies to end, and the environment to begin?” - Sissel asks in her artistic practice.
Human bodies are constantly evolving through mutual contamination or collaboration with their environments. Having the notion of fluid boundaries between bodies and their environments in our mind, the workshop participants will be encouraged to create site-specific stories at the area around Art Hub. The stories created during the workshop will be recorded into audio files and uploaded to Echoes app platform through the participants’ phones. The audios will be open source so that the public can later listen to them or go for an audio-walk through the specific sites.
To learn more about Sissel’s practice using Echoes, please see her recent project ‘Plastic Hypersea’ - an audio walk at the NDSM Wharf in Amsterdam. Link to Sonic Act festival: https://sonicacts.com/portal/experience-the-interactive-audio-walk-plastic-hypersea-by-sissel-marie-tonn
*The title of the workshop is a quote from The Mushroom at the End of the World: On the Possibility of Life in Capitalist Ruins (2015) by anthropologist Anna Tsing.

ABOUT SISSEL MARIE TONN
Sissel Marie Tonn is a Danish artist based in The Hague. Her practice focuses on the shifts in perception that occur when humans are entangled with their environment, blurring the boundaries between bodies and surroundings. Her artistic research often results in interactive sensorial installations and objects as an invitation for the audience to actively participate in her works.
Tonn was the recipient of the Theodora Niemeijer prize for emerging female artists, resulting in her first solo show at the Eye in Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven. She was a resident at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht in 2017 - 2018. In 2019 she received the talent development grant from Stimuleringsfonds NL, and in 2020 she was the recipient of the BAD Award, together with scientists Heather Leslie and Juan J. Garcia Vallejo for their project Becoming A Sentinel Species. Her work is frequently exhibited in The Netherlands and internationally, most recently in Istanbul Design Biennial (2018), Ballroom Marfa (2018) and Kikk Festival in Namur (2019).

ABOUT FACULTY OF SENSES
Faculty of Senses (FoS) is an artist-run initiative that explores new cross sensory art forms through research, public talks, workshops and performance.
FoS focuses on the senses and the apparatuses both within and external to the body that we use to perceive and engage with the world.
FoS creates public platforms in which artist practitioners and researchers engage with and reflect on these sensory apparatuses within a cultural-historical framework.
FoS aims to create an open-source inspired model for creating community around these topics.
