Sheep to Skein is a workshop for handspinners ready to take the plunge into preparing their own spinnable fibre from raw fleece.Located at Cloverleaf Corriedale Stud, a farming social enterprise focusing on sustainable land management and ethical animal participation, the workshop will cover the following:
The structure of wool and differences between breeds
Tips and tricks for selecting a fleece for spinning
How to clean fleece to make it ready for preparation
How to use the three main fleece preparation tools - wool combs, hand carders and drum carders
Tips for choosing the most appropriate fleece and preparation style for a project
The tutors for this workshop are Emily De Rango and Ronelle Welton. Emily has practised textile arts for most of her life, and enjoys designing unique yarns that perfectly fit their intended purpose. Ronelle is the proprietor of Cloverleaf Corriedale Stud, and is passionate about producing top-quality fleece and yarns from happy sheep.
Date: Saturday 7 December, 10am - 3pm (with optional farm tour afterward)
Location: Cloverleaf Corriedale Stud, 1136 Bacchus Marsh Rd, Bullengarook
Cost: $150, includes morning and afternoon tea, comprehensive workshop notes and samples to take home and spin.
We ask participants to bring a notebook and pen and their own lunch. Please wear sturdy closed-toe shoes.
Note: The workshop focuses on fibre preparation, so there is no need to bring a spinning wheel. Wheels will be available for participants interested in sampling their preparations.
