How does the assessment of children‘s sign language skills support pedagogical practices and the development of sign language teaching materials?
Following children's sign language development and learning is a key part of their educational pathway. Assessment helps practitioners to identify specific learning needs of individual pupils as well as with planning targeted pedagogical practices. Recent years have seen growing activities in the field of sign language assessment in different countries. This has resulted in a notable increase in newly developed assessment tools as well as in adaptions of existing sign language tests for other sign languages. For teachers, this means that they have more varied methods and ways to assess children’s sign language skills. At the same time, this requires teachers not only to be competent in using different assessment tools, but also know how to interpret and apply the information provided by the test to their teaching. Another challenge may be the need for ongoing training to maintain teacher’s own skills so that they can use different assessment tools. The aim of this workshop is to address the question of what comes after the assessment. We will discuss ways in which results from different assessment tools can be used lesson planning, development of educational materials and practices.
In addition, we will reflect together on why assessment is important, the meaning of the information it provides, and how to make the best use of this information.
