Introduction to India’s oldest classical dance form. This beginner-friendly class is designed for anyone curious about the art of Bharatanatyam.
This workshop will begin with a salutation (namaskaram) and cover the foundations of Bharatanatyam, including basic postures (aramandi and mulumandi), hand gestures (mudras), rhythmic footwork, and expressive facial techniques (abhinaya). Participants will learn a simple choreography that combines the techniques introduced in the class. No prior experience is necessary!
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Maginda Magendrathajan - Dancer, Choreographer with the Voices Dance Project
Maginda Magendrathajan is a Bharatanatyam dancer living in Ottawa on the unceded, unsurrendered Territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation. With 15 years of training in the Vazhuvoor style, she completed her arangetram in 2008 and is a certified Bharatanatyam teacher through the Kalaimanram Academy of Fine Arts.
ABOUT THE VOICES DANCE PROJECT
The Voices Dance Project (VDP) is a non-profit dance collective that puts dancers at the center of artistic creation in a collaborative, supportive, and accessible environment. VDP aims to give independent dancers a space to explore choreography and expression. The project enables dancers to workshop new choreographic works, to think critically about existing dance structures and institutions, and to train and perform on stage or in multimedia productions. Through these performances, VDP hopes that artists will be able to develop experience, connect with artists from a variety of backgrounds, and discover new ways of expressing themselves. The project specifically offers a creative space to dancers with experience training and performing in ballet, modern dance, contemporary dance, indigenous dance styles and traditional dance styles from around the world. The project provides dancers of all body types, ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, ethnicities, genders and sexual identities a platform for their works to be experienced, unfettered, by audiences in the National Capital Region. Maginda Magendrathajan est une danseuse de Bharatanatyam qui vit à Ottawa, sur le territoire non cédé de la nation algonquine Anishinaabe. Après 15 ans d'entraînement dans le style Vazhuvoor, elle a terminé son arangetram en 2008 et est un professeur de Bharatanatyam certifié par l'Académie des beaux-arts de Kalaimanram.
À PROPOS DU PROJET CHORÉGRAPHIQUE VOICES
Le Projet Chorégraphique Voices (Voices Dance Project) est un collecif de danse interdisciplinaire à but non lucratif qui place les danseur(e)s au cœur du processus de création artistique dans un environnement collaboratif et accessible. Le Projet s'érige en laboratoire pour les danseur(e)s indépendant(e)s où ielles peuvent créér de nouvelles oeuvres chorégraphiques, se questionner sur les structures et les institutions existantes de la danse, s'entraîner et se produire sur scène ou dans des productions multimédias. À travers ce travail, les artistes développent de l'expérience, ont l'occasion de collaborer avec des artistes issus de divers horizons et découvrent de nouvelles façons de s'exprimer. Le projet offre spécifiquement un espace créatif aux danseurs formés en ballet, en danse moderne, en danse contemporaine, en styles de danse autochtones et en styles de danse traditionnels du monde entier. Le projet offre aux danseur(e)s de tous types de corps, de tous âges, de tous milieux socio-économiques, de toutes ethnies, de tous genres et de toutes identités sexuelles une plateforme pour que leurs œuvres soient découvertes, sans entraves, par le public de la région de l'Outaouais.
