About this Event
Workshop description overview
This workshop explores voice, sound, and text improvisation, welcoming everyone from poets and musicians to those simply curious about pushing creative boundaries.
Designed for participants of all backgrounds, this inclusive workshop embraces any form of sound-making, from vocalization to object play, culminating in a powerful collective performance.
Workshop description overview
This workshop spans four sessions, culminating in a final session dedicated to rehearsal and a public performance. Over the first three sessions, participants will engage in inventive, challenging tasks designed to push creative limits, gradually building toward a dynamic, collective expression of voice, sound, and text. In the fourth session, we bring it all together in an open-to-public performance, enhanced by live digital effects and looping to create an immersive, collective experience.
What to Bring to the Workshop
Participants are invited to bring selected texts—from their own writing, be it prose or poetry, or from any external sources, such as articles, literary excerpts, or passages from admired authors. Alongside any sound-making objects, whether musical instruments or resonant everyday items, these texts will become the foundation for an exploration of layered and impactful sound and voice expression. We welcome participants who speak or read different languages to bring those into the mix as well, exploring the sonic textures and core sounds of diverse poetry.
Who is this Workshop For?
This workshop invites writers, poets, actors, musicians, singers, beatboxers, percussionists, and anyone enthusiastic about experimenting with voice, sounds, and different languages. Whether you're experienced or simply curious, you'll find new techniques to incorporate into your artistic practice and collaborative expression.
This inclusive workshop welcomes everyone, including those who may not sing or speak, as any sound—whether made with vocal cords, objects, or other creative means—is a valuable contribution to our collective exploration.
Previous Workshops in Brazil, Kazakhstan, and Croatia
In past workshops held in Brazil, Kazakhstan, and Croatia, this format has been expanded through improvisations with poetry, musical instruments, and voice, each culminating in a unique public performance. Here are some highlights:
- Kazakhstan: Concluded with a concert open to the public. Watch here
- Brazil: Finished with a radio-drama style performance. Watch here
- Croatia (Zagreb): Featured a live music and sound improvisation concert, broadcasted to 20 North American and European radio stations. Watch here
- Croatia (Zadar): Combined music and text for an engaging performance. Watch here
Each version of the workshop brought together different artistic elements and audiences, creating a memorable, collaborative experience.
The Result: An Experimental Sound and Storytelling Performance
Together, we will search for and build a powerful piece on a topic of shared, local or global significance. By the end, we’ll have crafted a performance that resonates with the audience, uniting individual voices in a dynamic collective soundscape. Join us on this journey into experimental storytelling, where we push the boundaries of group improvisation in new and unexpected directions.
