How to Talk to Your Racist Uncle (or anyone else) Workshop
10:30-5pm on 6th of April 2025 at Level 7, 101 Molesworth St, Thorndon, Wellington.
Are you worried about the pervasiveness of racism in New Zealand? Do you struggle with knowing how to handle racist comments and conversations when they are happening around you?
Learn to engage with racism in ways that make space for meaningful change and minimise defensive reactions. In this workshop you will get a chance to:
1) Develop a criteria so that you can make quick decisions as to when intervention from you is necessary
2) Practice having types of conversations that have the potential to challenge racism in a way that is productive
3) Focus on how we can have loving relationships that also hold people accountable when they have views that can hurt people.
In the current climate of genocide and the erosion of rights for tangata whenua, having the skills to hold anti-racist conversations is perhaps more important than ever before, you will leave this workshop feeling more empowered to hold these types of conversations.
Note that spaces are limited for this workshop just due to the size of the venue.
The workshop has no set cost to attend, as both facilitators are volunteering their time, but if you can afford to contribute to the costs of running the workshop, travel and providing snacks for everyone, we will have a box for cash on the day (suggested amount: $25)
Because it runs over lunchtime, we ask all attendees to bring their own lunch to eat, and some snacks to share. We will bring along some snacks and drinks too :)
If you would like to attend please register here: https://forms.gle/zYtUa6MQ61ZWhJeB7
This workshop is being facilitated by:
Gaayathri Nair, Gaayathri is a counsellor, before becoming a counsellor she worked extensively in the field of women's rights advocacy both in Aotearoa and overseas.
Krissi Smith (Tauiwi Pākehā) is a Tiriti o Waitangi educator and a translator and teacher of te reo Māori. She's been working as a facilitator for almost 20 years.
Let's make meaningful change, one conversation at a time
