The Feldenkrais Method® is an educational system which develops awareness through movement of oneself with the surrounding world. The Method is a sophisticated approach to change and comprehension that expands motor possibilities and develops the capacity to fully express oneself. It approaches the problem of how to facilitate learning which is necessary for the organization of the entire self and how to recuperate patterns or actions which have been excluded or unconsidered.
Awareness Through Movement® are movement lessons which are verbally guided and designed for groups. The lessons are intended to explore specific movement functions. Many lessons are based on habitual patterns of daily life such as breathing, walking, sitting, standing, rolling over, rolling to sit, reaching, bending, twisting, etc. Other lessons are structured to explore articulations, joints and postural options. Each
lesson consists in easy movement sequences which evolve into more complex actions.
Improvisation in dance blends creativity and execution and serves as preparation for the intellectual, emotional and physical aspects of dancing. It is a way of inserting oneself into the flow of conscious and unconscious thought, which induces a way of responding to a stimulus by simultaneously exploring it, creating it and executing it. Through the practice of improvising, concepts and motor materials become experience and their awareness begins to take on meaning to give shape to ideas, refine details and clarify the intentions of the compositional and choreographic messages of a dancer, choreographer or dance educator. The purpose of the improvisation workshop is to facilitate group harmony and develop the ability to interact and observe movement by spontaneously participating in the stimuli and actions generated along the way. In the laboratory, the fundamental elements of the language of dance improvisation will be explored.
