Join artist Sheila Hopkins for a community dance and movement workshop at the historic DeLUXE Theater located in the 5th Ward Cultural Arts
About this Event

This program is part of a series of dance workshops presented in conjunction with the exhibition, . Each workshop is led by a different local choreographer. All ages and abilities are welcome.


Workshop Description

In this workshop, participants will engage in a movement exploration of photographer Ming Smith’s creative artistic process and the aesthetic quality reflected in her work Participants will learn and interpret contemporary material inspired by the Katherine Dunham Technique, circular breathing, and qualities of jazz such as syncopation, improvisation, theme and variation. Participants will dance in a gallery setting and should wear comfortable shoes and attire.

About Sheila Hopkins

Sheila Hopkins is a dance artist, scholar and educator with over 20 years of experience. She holds a Master in Fine Arts degree in dance performance and choreography from Mills College in Oakland, California. Hopkins’ learning and performance experience is rich and diverse and includes presenting works by notable figures in dance, including Jose Limon, Ronald K. Brown, Robert Battle, Sean Curran, and Molissa Fenley. For the last 10 years, Hopkins has worked as the founding dance director of KIPP Sunnyside High School. As a dedicated educator inspired by the work of the great Katherine Dunham, she enjoys facilitating the conditions in which dance builds community and humanizes.
