Join us for an in-depth exploration of ceramic surface decoration through ornamental carving and texture!During this 6-hour workshop on Sunday, Oct. 17, participants will learn the intricacies of carved ceramic decoration to create elegant functional pottery. Working with internationally-renowned artist Yoshi Fujii, you will explore the processes of designing, carving, and embellishing clay vessels for exquisite finishes.
During the workshop, Yoshi will guide students through a series of 4 carving exercises with a break for lunch. Students will have the option to throw ware to carve during the workshop or bring in leather-hard pieces they've already built.
By the end of the class, you will have created 2-3 hand-carved ceramic tiles, 1-2 beautifully decorated pots, and a new understanding of the surface techniques used for creating elegant functional ceramics!
IMPORTANT: Everyone entering District Clay must be vaccinated. In order to take this workshop, you will need to upload your vaccination card - a link will be sent with your email receipt. You will not be registered for this workshop until your card is uploaded.

Sunday, October 17, 10 AM - 4 PM, with a break for lunch.
Please bring 1-2 leather-hard cylinders or vase forms and some simple design ideas. Also, bring ribbon sculpting tools or add a Kemper Mini Ribbon Sculpting Kit ($15, see below).
Each participant will build and carve 1-2 vases and 2-3 clay tiles. Tiles will be supplied by DCC.
If you wish, District Clay will bisque fire your pieces and you can pick them up approximately 2 weeks after the workshop.
Cost includes clay, ceramic tiles, firing fees, and lunch.
About Yoshi Fujii:
Yoshi Fujii is a ceramic artist and instructor based in Baltimore, Maryland. After earning his M.F.A. from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2008, Yoshi was invited to become a resident artist at Baltimore Clayworks as the 2008-09 Lormina Salter Fellow.
His delicately carved functional artwork has been published and shown in national and international exhibitions and competitions, won several awards, and added into collections. In 2011, he won the b-Grant from Baker Artist Awards and the Individual Artist Award from Maryland State Arts Council in 2015 for his excellence in craft. Yoshi received 2010 Mary E. Nyburg Fund for Artist Development for his 10-week residency at Tainan National University for the Arts in Taiwan, ROC.
Most recently, Yoshi taught privately in United Arab Emirates and United Kingdom from 2016 to 2019. He is one of the Ceramics Monthly’s Emerging Artists 2015 and a fellow of the Craftsmen's Guild of Mississippi. He currently teaches at Hood College, Anne Arundel Community college, and local community art centers in Maryland.
