“Making a zine is like composing a song. Each image is a note, and the sequence is the melody. It's about rhythm, flow, and emotional resonance.” –Todd HidoZines (and photo zines) throughout the 20th and 21st century have been a symbol of alternative culture and resistance. They have survived the digital revolution and continue to be a medium for telling stories, allowing artists (and photographers) to showcase their work outside of traditional contexts.
A zine, similarly to a book, offers us a unique opportunity to speak directly to the reader and create a dialogue that is intimate and always open to reinterpretation. Whilst as authors we have no control on how our audience continues the conversation we can learn the art of telling a story knowing that its beauty lies sometimes in ambiguity and emotional resonance.
In this workshop we are going to look at various examples of hand made zines, exploring some binding techniques and key visual narrative concepts. We’ll reflect together on the materiality of the book and look at how we can create an object that conveys our message and emotions through key elements that involve not only our sight but also touch and emotional memory.
Although this is a photo zine workshop your are encouraged to be as creative and free as possible by adding words, texture, appropriated images and anything that can be integrated into a book.
All materials are provided and no previous knowledge is required. We’ll be working with some sample images (provided) but we encourage you to bring your own images. We’ll be working with a maximum A5 zine format so make sure your printed images are A5 or smaller.
