Working with people seeking asylum and refugees - session 2 of 2

This is the 2nd training session for practitioners working with people seeking asylum and refugees in the Eastbourne and East Sussex area. It isn’t essential that you have joined us for the first.

Art Refuge artists and art therapists Jess Linton and Tony Gammidge will be joined by another member of the Art Refuge team, artist and animator Majid Adin. Majid joined the team having found inspiration with Art Refuge in the Calais refugee camp, in 2016.

This training takes place at a particularly challenging and difficult time for asylum seekers in the UK. For those working with people seeking asylum and refugees you are likely to be seeing the impact on the people you work with. It hopes to offer us some time and space to think about what is happening in a constructive and helpful way.

The focus on this trauma informed training will again be on self-care with more emphasis on the grounding techniques we touched on the last time, as well as taking a look at our own nervous systems and learning more about how we keep ourselves safe and regulated. This will be done in an accessible and inclusive way. Thinking about the nervous system obviously also relates to the people we work with, who will often be in high state of activation.

In the training we will use art materials but activities will not be about making art, we will use The Community Table model which has been at the heart of our project delivery in Art Refuge. It is an accessible space where we build, play and connect. (https://www.artrefuge.org.uk/community-table). We will also use the gallery and any artworks that might be relevant to the work that we do.

This session will again take place in the Towner Gallery thanks to the generosity of the learning team.
