• How can we understand narcissism from the lenses of attachment, trauma, and systemic theory?
• Which childhood experiences and parenting practices can increase the risk of developing a narcissistic disposition?
• How can trauma-informed interventions such as inner-child work support our work with systems where there are narcissistic processes?
• How do we process and manage our counter-transference and embodied cues when working with systems (couples, families, teams, organisations) with narcissistic processes?
• Which embodied and poly-vagal informed interventions are helpful when working with couples, families and systems with narcissistic traits or personalities?
Aimed for: Multi-disciplinary practitioners who have an interest in developing further empowering, compassionate, reflexive, embodied strategies and interventions on how to support people with Narcissistic traits and their significant others, including within systems. Those of you who attended the first workshop on narcissism held in October 2024 will notice that we will explore other layers in the upcoming workshop. You can still join this workshop if you have not attended the first workshop.
Since the workshop is experiential, it also aims to support the personal and professional growth of the practitioners. The professionals include psychotherapists, family therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors, guidance teachers, teachers, social workers, child and youth care workers, support workers, managers, etc.
A Reflection
My first encounter with narcissism, being professionally explained, dates back 30 years to my undergraduate training in psychology. I remember sitting in the lecture theatre, listening to our lecturer describing the different types of narcissism. My body started shaking as if it was struck by lighting. It was as if naming this process had opened this portal, and during the following 30 years, I kept exploring deeper and deeper.
A quest had been ignited: trying to make sense of this complex and vulnerable process, which has challenged me as I navigate relationships in my personal and professional life. In one of my bookshop explorations, eighteen-year-old me also encountered a fascinating book entitled "Unholy Hungers: Encountering the Psychic Vampire in Ourselves and Others," written by Dr Barbara Hort, a Jungian counsellor. The vampire's metaphor started to inspire my understanding of narcissism.
As time went by, the therapeutic modalities I received post-graduate training in included gestalt, systemic, attachment and trauma-informed, polyvagal-informed, embodied and expressive therapeutic modalities. These conceptual frameworks came alive in the therapeutic settings I worked with over the years, including the field of addiction, residential care and later on, mentorship, consultation and training with multi-disciplinary professionals and organisations. These frameworks are now solid backbones sustaining the approach I developed over time when working with people with narcissistic traits or personalities and their significant others.
As you have probably experienced yourself, working with narcissism can be very challenging and tests us to our core. I am grateful to the mentors who, throughout my professional life, inspired me to develop and evolve my resources when working with narcissism. I will share these grounding resources in the form of therapeutic reflections and also embodied therapeutic interventions.
This workshop will invite you to practice and take-home embodied action-oriented therapeutic tools. You can then teach these skills to your clients or significant others.
