About this Event
Start point: Stock Lane LDNPA car park, Grasmere
Length: 5.3km (3.3miles) with 83m (270ft of ascent)
Time: 2.5 hours (approx.)
Walk grade: 2 (see grade description below)
This walk visits a number of sites in Grasmere village relevant to William Wordsworth, his family and his poetry. These include: Dove Cottage; Greenhead Ghyll, the location of his poem 'Michael'; Allan Bank, where the Wordworths lived from 1808 to 1811; Easedale Beck, part of one of William and Dorothy's favourite walks; the site of the Parsonage (now demolished) where the Wordworths moved to in 1811; and the Wordsworth family graves in St Oswald's churchyard.
Please note: The walk goes to Dove Cottage and Allan Bank but entrance to these properties is NOT included as part of the walk. The end point is the LDNPA car park, a short walk from Dove Cottage should you wish to visit it afterwards. Entrance charges for both properites are on their respective websites.
The walk is on tarmacked roads or good footpaths throughout and is pushchair friendly but participants will need to dress appropriately for the terrain and weather.
Grade 2 walks are around villages and are focussed on a tour of historical and other points of interest. They may include some short ascents and descents. The path surface might be pavements, earth, grass or stone and – while generally firm – it may have some loose or uneven sections, or be soft underfoot after rain. You may also encounter steps, gates and narrow sections. Most of our grade 2 walks are very suitable for families, and some are pushchair friendly (please check route descriptions).
Your confirmation email will include full details - please read it carefully.
