Professor Rik Van Nieuwenhove, Professor of Medieval Thought, Durham University
Professor Van Nieuwenhove will discuss the Trinitarian mystical theology of Jan van Ruusbroec (+1381) and the later movement of Modern Devotion, also known as the Brethren of the Common Life. He will illustrate this spirituality with discussions of the paintings of Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden. Both the school of painting and the mystical writings of the Low Countries exerted a European-wide influence, including in England. The religious art of the fifteenth century Low Countries expresses some key themes of this spirituality and represents one of the pinnacles of European religious art.
