If you're looking to meet new people and have fun doing it, come join us on Wednesday nights at First Baptist Church's Gordon Hall 111 Park Ave Worcester, MA... right at the corner of Park Ave and Salisbury St., steps off WPI's campus, and across from Institute Park and the American Antiquarian Society. Entrance towards back of church, down the sidewalk between the building and a playground. Follow signs to get to Gordon Hall.
West Coast Swing, or Modern Swing, is a popular partner dance that's known for its smooth, stylish moves, and its emphasis on improvisation and connection between partners. It has an elastic look created through smooth movement and can be danced to a WIDE variety of music! You may have seen videos of it on TikTok and Instagram! Here's an example of what West Coast Swing looks like...
These are pros who are also partners (and dating?) so while they dance together often, they were randomly partnered and did not know the songs they would be dancing to. It's a great example of how you can play in West Coast Swing, make it your own, and a little about the range of music you can dance it to:
The beginner classes will cover the basic patterns, timing, technique and styling points of the dance. A really cool thing about West Coast Swing is how it builds, so you will see variations of these patterns over and over as you progress in your dancing.
The intermediate classes will be taught from the aspect that there is already an understanding of the sugar push/push break, sugar tuck, left side pass, right side pass, inside and outside turns, and the whip.
While we won't be doing anything incredibly athletic and acrobatic like the flips you might see on DWTS or YouTube, make sure you wear comfortable clothes for dancing in, and shoes that will securely stay on your feet. For safety, please no sandals or flip-flops! Sneakers or flat dress shoes are fine, if you have anything with a little bit of slide to them, that's even better.
No partner is needed, but this is always more fun with friends, so bring someone you think would enjoy dancing with us!
Can't make this week? Be on the lookout for future events; we're planning on holding this class weekly! Join the Worcester Westies group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1544516835601556) on Facebook for all the updates on this class and more from the New England area.
