Join us as we visit previously planted sites to monitor and survey trees and woodlands!
About this Event

Each Winter we plant thousands of trees in South Devon and on Dartmoor. During the Spring and Summer months we revisit previously planted sites to survey the biodiversity. You'll learn an array of new skills including tree identification, tree health, how to survey and record effectively, be part of a citizen science project and join a group of like-minded people!

The information we gather will be crucial in monitoring the health of the woodlands and allow us to better plan the woodlands of the future. Help us ensure the trees, grown from seed collected in ancient semi-natural woodland by our amazing volunteers, become the future forests of Dartmoor.

Our day starts at 11am and we'll carry out surveying of our trees and the biodiversity of the site and enjoying the scenery. We'll stop for lunch, before continuing in the afternoon.

Sometimes, we may visit two sites in one day. Each week we will be visiting a different site, so please note the change in address!

Please meet us at 10.30am for an 11am start here:

Dean Burn , Cross Furzes, Buckfastleigh TQ11 0JE

Please note that there is limited parking available at this site, so lift sharing is recommended.

The Dean Burn is a tributary of the river Dart and the site borders a Planted Ancient Woodland Site (PAWS) known as Larkham wood that runs into Dean wood another PAWS. The planting site itself has a small band of young woodland that follows a tributary of the Dean Burn which has probably been regenerating over the past 150 years. The new planting site was designed to give support to this woodland regeneration by leaving an open strip next to it to allow for further regeneration. The site is close to the open moor with a bridleway through it and as such is a popular walk not least for the Abbot of Buckfast Abbey many hundreds of years ago, who used it to visit abbeys near Tavistock and Ivybridge. This is now know as the Abbots way.

Access: Via The Abbots Way (a public bridleway) N.B. No open public access across whole site. Terrain: Sloping terrain following the Dean Burn.

Full details will be emailed a few days before the event.

We provide cake and soft drinks, as well as all of the equipment required to undertake the task in hand on the day.

Please bring with you the following: water, snacks, lunch, weather-appropriate clothing, sturdy footwear, sun-cream and sun hat. Please bear in mind that there may be ticks on site, so wearing full length trousers and long sleeves is advisable.
