Join the Woodland Restoration Foundation for a special screening of the 1973 film "The Book of Numbers" - an adaptation of a novel by Richmond native and Virginia Union graduate Robert Deane Pharr (1916-1992). Afterwards, host Gary Flowers will walk us through the life of Robert Deane Pharr and the truth about the numbers racket in Jackson Ward. One of the many notables interred at Woodland Cemetery, Robert Deane Pharr captivated the imaginations of readers worldwide with his 1969 novel "The Book of Numbers" which tells the story of the numbers racket in 1930s Jackson Ward. It was reworked and then adapted by actor Raymond St. Jaques for the 1973 movie which received great reviews. Critics said it was "a refreshing contrast to the frantic black exploitation movies of the time." The film stars actor/director Raymond St. Jacques (Black Like Me, The Pawnbroker, Cotton Comes To Harlem, Come Back Charleston Blue, Glory). It also features early career appearances by Philip Michael Thomas (Sparkle, Miami Vice), Actress and vocalist Freda Payne (Band of Gold), and many others.
There will be beverages and popcorn available for purchase along with raffle items. All proceeds will benefit the Woodland Restoration Foundation; the stewards of historic Woodland Cemetery where Mr. Pharr rests among some 30,000 other African Americans who called the Richmond area home. Please be aware that this film contains coarse language and violence and is not recommended for anyone under the age of 18.
