Dear Nature Volunteers,The south facing chalk slopes downriver from the Goring Gap are known to be good habitat for orchids, see, for example, the BBOWT site at Hartslock. Given the right conditions it's thought that the variety and extent of the local orchid populations could be significantly improved, so the Hardwick Estate, with an initiative begun and managed by the botanist Andy Byfield, is looking to develop one of its woodland areas as an orchid habitat.
Trees have been selectively removed to open the woodland floor to sunlight. The next stage is to expose as much mineral earth as possible to enhance the chances of germination. The woodland floor needs to be raked clear of undergrowth and the seasonal leaf fall. We started work here last year, and today's task will develop what we began then.

We're short of task leaders at the moment and we can't carry on without them.
Some of our tasks are much easier to lead than others, so if you're a regular volunteer please consider stepping up to do a bit of leading. Any of the task leaders will be happy to let you shadow them until you're confident you know the ropes. If you are interested, please get in touch - we need more leaders.
