Wooden Tag Carving Workshop by Japanese master craftsman Akihiko Maeda
Come join us for a unique experience at where you can learn the art of wooden tag carving from the renowned master craftsman Akihiko Maeda. Immerse yourself in the traditional Japanese woodworking techniques and create your own masterpiece to take home. This hands-on workshop will be only available for limited number of people, space is very limited. Don‘t miss this opportunity to learn from a true expert in the field!
Join artisan Akihiko Maeda for an immersive hands-on workshop where you’ll learn the fundamentals of traditional Japanese woodcarving in the creation of a wooden tag (Kifuda). Participants will be chosen one letter in either Kanji (Chinese Character) or alphabet letter for carving on a wooden tag (approximately 2" x 2.5", exact size is subject to change).
Under his expert guidance, discover the techniques and tools that define this centuries-old craft. Whether you’re a total beginner or already have some experience with woodworking, this master class offers a unique opportunity to create your own carved piece to take home while receiving personalized instruction from an expert craftsman.
In connection with the “Masters of Carpentry: Melding Forest, Skill and Sprit” exhibition , WAZA Shop and JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles is hosting a weekend-long celebration of traditional Danjiri wood carving featuring demonstrations and a rare hands-on workshop. For over 300 years, master craftsmen in Osaka prefecture have created ornate wooden carvings for the floats carried during the annual Danjiri festival. These stunning sculptures depict themes from mythology, military history, and nature, and are a prized part of local heritage. Special guest, Akihiko Maeda, a wood carving master from Osaka prefecture, will be showcasing this art-form through demonstrations and a workshop, introducing visitors to the historic tools and techniques used in the creation of these works.

This intimate demonstration will be a rare opportunity to see this craft come alive and to learn about a treasured part of Osaka culture. Visitors will get a close-up perspective of Maeda’s techniques and tools, and are invited to try out hammering with a traditional wooden mallet.
