In this one day class we’ll start with a few freshly cut or “green” logs and split them down into workable wooden blanks to carve spoons. We’ll learn traditional greenwood carving techniques, from using axes and froes to split along the wood grain, to shaping our work into form with a simple carving, or slojd, knife. Students will learn how to source and store wood for projects, wield a knife safely with a few staple carving grips, and we’ll discuss design and form too, carving the wood into usable objects good for stirring a pot of stew or scooping up a spoon full of cereal for breakfast. No previous experience necessary. Open to students 16 & up.
