This one-day class will start with a few freshly cut or “green” logs and split them down into workable wooden blanks to carve spoons. Learn traditional greenwood carving techniques, from using axes and froes to split along the wood grain, to shaping our work into form with a simple carving, or slojd knife. Students will learn how to source and store wood for projects, wield a knife safely with a few staple carving grips, and discuss design and form too, carving the wood into utile objects good for stirring a pot of stew or scooping up a spoon full of cereal for breakfast. All tools, including safety gloves, will be provided in the class, and students will take home a finishing kit so their spoon is kitchen-ready.If weather permitting classes will be outside at Nordic Northwest’s forested Fogelbo property.
