THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF BARNS, COMING SOON! April 8th, 2025The Historical and Genealogy Society will welcome you to the world of old barns. This is an attempt to preserve history by painting pictures of the Hocking County barns and drafting an essay about each barn. The artist, Robert Kroeger, a retired Dentist from Cincinnati, has been donating proceeds to historical societies, 4-H, or other non-profit organizations throughout Ohio for several years now.
Mr. Kroeger uses pallet knives to paint in the oil impasto technique, on canvas or masonite panels. Impasto oil with this method reflects light making the painting stand out. He frames the paintings with old barnwood, preferably from the barns’ own wood if possible. This is an additional way of preserving history.
With the old farm barns disappearing, part of our history is vanishing as well. Barns were important to early settlers. The barn was always the primary concern for farms, dairy, livestock, hay, grain and more. The farmers kept wagons, horses, and other farm equipment safe and protected from the weather.
Many old wooden barns are too expensive to restore, and are falling apart, and with them a part of history also dies. Robert Kroeger uses this project to have influence by prolonging those wonderful memories.
We are already looking for farm barns for our 2026 auction. The falling down, sagging, old barns are what we are looking for. We will be traveling over Hocking County looking for additional farm barns Mr. Kroger will paint for next year’s fundraiser. Dave Crawford and Nyla Vollmer are Hocking County barn scouts, and we drive Dr. Kroeger all over the county to locate new to us old barns. We will be visiting barns April 7 and 8th so the barns can be photographed, and next year he will have these all painted and frames for next year’s auction.
This year we have over 30 local beautifully barn paintings, framed and ready to hang in your home or office. Auction hours will be posted closer to the date. This will be at a Silent Auction and reception held at the museum.
Robert Kroeger is also an author and has books available at the Historical Society at 64 N. Culver St. Logan. He donates the proceeds of the books to the museum. His books are Historic Barns of Ohio and Round Barns of America.
His web site is http://barnart.weebly.com where you can go to Ohio Barns and then down to Hocking County to see our 2025 barns and essays.
