Prof. Dana Winters:
I’ve been captivated by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since the first time I stepped onto the mat when I was 19years old, and it’s been an integral part of my life ever since. From my roots in mixed martial arts, I quickly realized how vital BJJ was as the foundation of my game. It’s not just about striking or conditioning—it’s about control, leverage, and using your opponent's movements against them. That’s what drew me into the sport, and that’s what has kept me on this path.

Through years of dedication, hard work, and countless hours on the mat, I earned my black belt—a milestone that represents not only technical mastery, but a commitment to the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Along the way, I’ve had the privilege of competing in many BJJ tournaments and in Mixed Martial Arts events where I’ve tested my skills in real competition. Every match, every submission, and every victory or defeat has pushed me to continuously improve and growing both as a martial artist and a person.

As we observe Sexual Assault Awareness Month, I’m reminded of the powerful role that BJJ plays in helping individuals—especially women—feel empowered and confident. The techniques I’ve learned through years of training have provided me with the tools to protect myself, no matter the situation. BJJ’s focus on leverage and technique, regardless of size or strength, offers practical self-defense skills that can be life-changing. In a world where personal safety is a real concern, Jiu-Jitsu gives you the mental and physical strength to stand up for yourself and navigate any situation with confidence.

This month, I reflect on how Jiu-Jitsu not only builds physical strength, but mental resilience and self-assurance. From my experience in MMA to competing in BJJ tournaments, I know firsthand how training can boost your confidence and prepare you for challenges both in and out of the gym. Earning my black belt has been a journey of perseverance, and I’m passionate about sharing the transformative power of BJJ with others.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has shaped me into someone who is not only stronger physically, but also more grounded and confident in all aspects of life. Whether you’re training for competition, self-defense, or personal growth, I believe BJJ can help anyone unlock their full potential. This Sexual Assault Awareness Month, I encourage others to explore BJJ—not just as a martial art, but as a path to empowerment, safety, and strength.
