Join us on February 14th at 1:00 PM in front of the PG Native Friendship Centre. We will then march to the PG Courthouse where drumming, speakers and refreshments will be available. The women’s memorial march was first held in 1992 in Vancouver in response to the murder of a woman in downtown Vancouver. In an effort to raise awareness and call for action the Women’s Memorial March came to be. The march continues on the 14th of February each year to commemorate and honour the lives of those lost and to hold all accountable to the action that is needed. Indigenous women continue to be disproportionally lost and this gender-based violence must stop. Here in Northern British Columbia countless Indigenous women have gone missing or been found murdered in a space that is known as the Highway of Tears. There is still debate as to the exact number but it is believed that the number exceeds 30. In addition to this Indigenous Women and Girls are at least three times more likely toe experience violence, and at least six times more likely to be murdered than any other woman or girl in Canada (Amnesty International, 2023). We need change and we need it now.
