Women's Voices: Preaching the Women of the Bible

Uncovering the voices of women in the Bible - so we can hear them and find out about them.
About this Event

Led by The Revd Canon Dr Liz Shercliff and The Revd Dr Kate Bruce. Liz and Kate will be uncovering the voices of women in the Bible - so we can hear them and find out about them.

These women are in the shadows, in the background, yet if we look carefully, we will discover that through their stories they have the ability to move us and reveal something of the good news to us.

This event is open to anyone interested, but those who preach will find this invaluable. Liz Shercliffe and Kate Bruce are entertaining and enthusiastic speakers. They will deliver sessions around the theme of preaching and will finish the day with the first book launch of Out of the Shadows Vol 2 which will be available to purchase. Tea and coffee etc provided throughout. Bring your own lunch; alternatively, there are plenty of cafes and stalls in BSE.

Registration and refreshments from 10.30am, sessions start at 11.00am.

The Revd Canon Dr Liz Shercliff is on the academic staff of the Luther King Centre in Manchester. She is also a visiting lecturer at Emmanuel Theological College, the Nazarene College and Derby Diocese. She has published Preaching Women: Gender, Power and the Pulpit (SCM: 2019), The Present Preacher: Discerning God in the Now, with Matt Allen (Canterbury Press: 2021) Out of the Shadows: Preaching the Women of the Bible Volumes 1 and 2 with Kate Bruce (SCM: 2021, 2024). She contributes regularly to The Preacher's Companion, The Preacher magazine and Preach magazine. She has recently researched women's experiences of training in the Church of England. She is a regular theatre goer and tennis player.

The Revd Dr Kate Bruce is an RAF Chaplain, writer and regular preacher, with a PhD in homiletics. She leads and contributes to retreats and conferences, and has taught preaching in different contexts over many years. She has published: Igniting the Heart: Preaching and Imagination (SCM:2015) and edited, with Jamie Harrison, Wrestling with the Word: Preaching Tricky Texts (SPCK:2016). With Liz Shercliff she wrote Out of the Shadows: Preaching The Women of the Bible, Vols 1 and 2 (SCM 2021, 2024). She is a regular contributor to The Preacher’s Companion and Reflections for Daily Prayer. She has an interest in Spiritual Direction, and enjoys training in the gym.
