This tour starts at Maine Historical Society.Join Maine Historical Society for a guided tour of historic Portland highlighting the lives, work, and history of women. Learn about the historic impact women have had on shaping Maine's largest city from the stories of familiar names like Anne Longfellow Pierce, to the lesser-known tales like Rhoda Partridge, the first female teacher in Stroudwater, and the workers of Curtis and Sons Chewing Gum factory and the Portland munitions factories during WWI . Famous city residents, industries, architecture, historic landmarks, social history, and the Great Fire of 1866 are among the topics covered. These tours are based in part on the Portland Women's History Trail, a collaborative project developed by historians, Polly Kaufman, Eileen Eagan, and Candace Kanes, with staff including Patricia Finn, and students at USM and MECA.
