Speaker Biographies
Honourable Sonya Savage:
Minister Savage was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta on April 16, 2019, as the MLA for Calgary-North West.
A life-long Albertan, Savage has been a strong voice championing pipelines for years. Earning a Master of Laws in Environment and Energy, she practiced law for 13 years before taking a job as an advocate for the oil and gas industry.
After working 9 years at Enbridge, she accepted a role as the Sr. Director of Policy and Regulatory Affairs at the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association in 2015. She has handled the pipeline industry’s large policy files, including regulatory reform, Indigenous reconciliation, legal, environment and climate change.
Sonya Savage was appointed as Alberta’s Minister of Energy on April 30, 2019. Relying on her extensive background in the industry, and spending the last 12 years fighting for pipelines and the energy sector, Savage will continue her work to promote and develop Alberta’s oil and gas wealth and deliver on getting pipelines built.
Honourable Whitney Issik:
Whitney Issik was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Calgary-Glenmore on April 16, 2019. Before being named the Minister of Environment and Parks in June 2022, she served as the Associate Minister for the Status of Women.
A descendant of a gritty entrepreneurial Alberta family, Issik studied political science and economics, earning a bachelor degree from the University of Calgary. She’s operated a small business for nearly 30 years and also worked in telecommunications, wind and hydro, and oil and gas.
Like many Alberta families, Issik’s family lost everything because of the Trudeau Liberals 1980 National Energy Program. That pain motivated her to dedicate her time and energy to politics.
Before running for office, Issik became a highly sought-after key political strategist and policy architect in conservative circles, having worked on various provincial and federal campaigns. Issik was also named National Policy Co-Chair for the Federal Progressive Conservative Party in the early 2000s.
Issik’s strong business experience and policy understanding has led to a seamless transition into Environment and Parks. She is committed to a clean future, one that will build on a strong foundation that provides opportunity for this and future generations.
