About this Event
This event will give attendees a chance to hear from fifth-time published author Dr Velma McClymont about the making of her long-awaited book, Little River (1731-1812), which tells the story of the Jamaican people and adds to the body of literature on reparative justice and decolonizing the curriculum.
What will become clear in the discussion is that this womanist historical novel seeks to retrieve enslaved Africans (subaltern voices) from the footnotes of British male writers' Eurocentric narratives. By disrupting such "unreliable narrations", Little River also writes back to white women writers such as Janet Schaw, Anna Maria Falconbridge (who travelled on a slave ship from West Africa to Jamaica) and Lady Maria Nugent. These "ladies of quality" left journals and diaries of their sojourn in the British West Indies...
Dr Mcclymont will talk about WomanzVue Publishing and designing the book. She will also discuss:
- The Scottish sugar barons in Jamaica.
- Representation in publishing, and more...
From 6.00pm there will be an hour-long discussion and a Q & A session. Thereafter, copies of the book will be available to purchase. Payments accepted by cash or card.
This event is sponsored by The Weekly Gleaner UK.
Special guests include the following people: George Ruddock, (Managing Director of The Weekly Gleaner), Professors Gus John, Professor Tony Leiba, Brother Cecil Gutzmore (historian), Sister Esther Stanford-Xosei (reparationist) and Brother Kwaku (ethnomusicologist and community historian).
