Menopause, midlife and elderhood - they are the unchartered territory of a woman’s life, the less talked about, less acknowledged and certainly less celebrated. During this evening of stories and conversation, we’ll swap the empty promises of anti-ageing treatments for timeless story medicine. It’s an invitation to a conversation about menopause, the mid-life threshold and the second half of life - the howls and the hallelujahs of ageing - and to let the wise women of myth, folktales and legend - a whole gaggle of witches, enchantresses, goddesses, giantesses, grandmothers, shape-shifters, hen wives and hags, guide and inspire our eldering. This is a women’s storytelling event. It is specifically for those curious about the second half of a woman’s life, or with direct experience of the approach to and passage through menopause and the challenges and glory of growing into an elder woman. Please bring your curiosity and experience to the conversation. Among the stories that will arise are those included in Angharad and Sharon Blackie’s new book, WISE WOMEN, Myths and Stories for Midlife and Beyond, published last October by Virago.
This event, in collaboration with National Trust Dinefwr, will be held in the glorious Drawing Room of Newton House. Both the castle and the house have been homes to some amazing women, and we'll meet a few throughout the evening. So come join us as we sip hot spiced wine (included in your ticket), let our conversations inspire stories and let stories ignite our discussions about what it is to move through menopause and into our elder years.
ABOUT ANGHARAD
Angharad has spent much of her life exploring the landscapes and lore of this land. Since childhood, she has followed her feet along pathways back through the portals of ancient myth, folklore, history, song and poetry of Britain, and particularly of her native Wales. She shares her learning and explores understanding and contemporary practice through storytelling, retreats, pilgrimages, ceremony and writing. These are conceived as radical acts of re-membering our soulful, deep humanity and re-weaving ourselves back into fully engaged participation within the web of life.
Angharad is a published poet and writer. Her work as a storyteller has taken her to festival stages across Europe, India and the US and to firesides in fields, woodlands, savannahs and open deserts across the world. Her new book, in collaboration with Dr. Sharon Blackie, ‘Wise Women, Myths and Stories for Midlife and Beyond, is published by Virago.
Books will be available for purchase on the night.
