WINTERLUDE, the holiday event at Tumbleroot on December 12th, will include an artist market featuring several artists selling their beautiful work: paintings, photos, jewelry, textiles, glass and mixed media. Seven of the nine artists are members of the sixty one year old artist cooperative in Old Town Albuquerque, Yucca Art Gallery.
The Cooperative has a fascinating history. It’s hard to believe that sixty one years ago women were not permitted to show their art work in Old Town Albuquerque galleries. A group of Albuquerque Pen Women, got together and started an Artists' Cooperative gallery in Old Town so they could show their own work. That gallery became the Yucca Art Gallery.
Pen Women were members of the National League of American Pen Women founded in 1897 for journalists who were not permitted to join male-only professional organizations. It soon became the professional organization for women writers, artists and composers, where they could be recognized for their talents. Early members were Eudora Welty, Peal Buck, Grandma Moses, Georgia O’Keeffe, Maya Angelou, Eleanor Roosevelt, Amy Beach, and sculptress Vinnie Ream who won the congressional commission in 1866 at age 18 to carve the marble statue of Abraham Lincoln that stands in th rotunda of the US Capitol.
The WINTERLUDE artists will be selling a variety of works at a range of prices.
Participating artists are members of the Yucca Art gallery, a 61 year old Artist’s Cooperative located in the heart of ABQ’s Historic Old Town.
